Doug Wright, Managing Director
Doug Wright

Doug Wright leads Lightship, overseeing its management team and providing strategic direction to the organization. Under his guidance, Lightship has developed deep expertise in the financial services, insurance and manufacturing industries, leading to successful projects with such industry giants as IBM, Flowserve, Guardian and USAA. Leading the software industry in Object Technology and Technical Architecture since 1992, Doug co-founded Lightship with Jon Kern in 1996 and the company has consistently been on the forefront of technology ever since.

Doug is an Application Integration expert and the author of several papers on Web services and numerous development processes. As Managing Director, he works closely with clients to determine their business needs, planning the technology strategies to achieve their corporate goals. He holds a Master's degree in Engineering Science from Pennsylvania State University and is the winner of the elite Herman R. Salmon Technical Publications Award. Doug has served as a technical advisor on several large enterprise application review boards.

Jon Kern, Director of Technology

Outspoken agile software engineering evangelist, co-author of the Agile Manifesto, speaker, and author; Jon's experience is wide-ranging across varied problem domains and technology platforms. From jet engine R&D (he's an aerospace engineer, after all) to real-time flight simulator design and development, from TogetherSoft's and OptimalJ's commercial desktop modeling tools, to architecting and leading a team to build IBM's Manufacturing Execution System software -- Jon has seen and done a lot in his 20+ years. He has led numerous teams, including teams in Russia, his own consulting firm, and has consulted/mentored hundreds others.

Jon is an expert at distributed team development, and prides himself on getting projects into production. Recent projects have included an advanced Semantic-Web-based electronic patient health care record, an insurance agent quotation web app, and a Doctor alert system for the Emergency Department at a major hospital.

Peter Coad recruited Jon in Sep. '99, to help launch TogetherSoft, so Jon took a "sabbatical" from Lightship. Jon was a driving force behind the success of the company and its products prior to its 2003 sale to Borland. He enjoyed the 2 years he spent commuting to St. Petersburg, Russia, to lead the development teams. Though never actually "leaving" Lightship, Jon has since rejoined his original core team at Lightship.

Jon's work on lightweight development methodologies (which began as a form of self-defense against waterfall-esque DoD standards) led him to be invited to the Agile Manifesto gathering. He also co-authored "Java Design" with his longtime mentor, Peter Coad, and worked on a few other books. Jon's a nut when it comes to modeling effectively (focused on the business), building and architecting consistently, and doing it in an agile manner to deliver results. If a team ignores these best practices, it invites the peril of building up Technical Debt, as he likes to refer to it.
